I think you are all wrong, im sure the record was set by right honourable Mr hayes and myself during exercise lionheart or maybe the year before. We had the NATO big wigs down to do an assessment and flew through the 2 craters in no time.

im sure Russ will confirm

Eeeeeeee I can smell the AFTAG and hear the roar. Oh what changes 30 years brings. Apparently some accomadation blocks are now home to Eastern European Migrant workers. If you had told me that in the 80's I would of laughed it off as rediculous. Oh how time change. As for Tuffty though, he still has a large cock welded to him and is adored by all the local women. Na not really. (how did I escape a 252 all those years).

Team Work is the key to everything John, shame there isn't much of it in Civvy Street, it took me ages when I started my own company in 1987 to build a team around me that I could trust, but we all reaped the rewards when I sold it in 1999... we had good teams back in the day (as they say nowadays)... I am up for a reunion at Laarbruch... are you lot bringing diggers....

John 50 Sqn plant ops were the best. Hard to believe Laarbruch is shut and now an airport. Good place for a re-union I reckon.

That's very true David, think about Danny and myself having to stand there amoungst them, directing them all.

But l have to say, those guy's were the best, l had complete faith in them all, infact they never needed us there,(Danny and l, l mean) they new what to do without instructions, as we had done it in practice so often, that's why we did break the record, as did the bunnies that were with us, team work.
That's why your lot probably did when you did it in '83 l suppose.

I think It must have been our record that was broken by the more recent members of 3 troop as i remember being told we were the fastest and the bestest in the world and I was not at maidstone in 83.

Well Mr Blyth, l stand corrected, l thought we couldn't be beaten, as we had such a great crew doing all the work, well at least it stayed with 50 Sqn, so well done one and all........................ wav

But also in my defence, l was asking about the one we did with 3 Troop Plant, David, l admit that you did beat the record, of that bit l got wrong, but was in the title David, asking for the names really of who drove what, and so on, thanks' one and all, again

The reason I said 3rd September 1983, was because I recall we finished two holes and were doing some clearing up, when we were told by the SSM that he had confimed we had broken the record previously held by the squadron. I remember that day specifically because that night I was called to Sgt's mess where I was told by the same SSM and Maj Harrison that my mother had died. So it sort of sticks in my memory a little. I don't know if it was the all time record or what but I do remember the incident.

who blow up things

who blow up other things

who change all the switches to read on when they are off and off when they are on
who blow up more things
who put grease nipples on tool boxes when they are locked and pump grease in to things
and then blow up sea gulls and other things

Look lets get this all straightened out

Basically there are 2 types of Sapper. Ones with a big shovel that has wheels and an engine and ones with a small shovels that has a wooden handle on it.

The ones with the small shovel out number the ones with the big shovels and have friends.

The Sappers with the big shovels dig holes for the sappers with the smaller shovels to get into and trim the holes square and level just as if the had been dug by a professional plant op.

The Sappers with the big shovels bring sand or gravel to the hole so the Sappers with small shovels can fill the hole in again.
Whilst this is happening the Sappers with the big shovels go to sleep in their cabs or read porn mags. Some had been rumoured to sit in there cabs peeling the pages appart of hydraulics weekly.

When it rains the sappers with the small shovels get wet whilst the sappers with big shovels dont even know its raining.

There is a type of sapper that has a long thin shovel called a grader. This makes surfaces unlevel and gives the sapper with a grader a bad back so a sapper with a small shovel has to take his place.

There is one exception to all of this and that sTony who was the sapper that did sweet FA

So thats 3 types of Sapper really., I cant count and thats why I was a bunny

All the best chaps Sonny

I can feel a re-union coming on, or piss up with all that was there.

So they would meet up at a watering HOLE, get it, oh OK maybe not, but you get the jest.

So we have all that was on the plant equipment, flying around at a 100mph, digging, scrapping, pushing, rolling, and brushing.

Who now was there laying, drilling and so on? feck me Wardy and l were racking our brains as to who was where what and how, but it's much better getting the truth like this.....thanks'

Just like to check though, are we right about the date, as '83 we had left....... icon_salut icon_salut

Which Plant Op was it that had the responsibility of using the little chipping machine close to the edge of the hole and sometimes too close for comfort. and the speed the tippers would arrive and reverse up that was a wonder that they never filled the hole in themselves.

David, l beg to differ matey, but in 1983, most of us had left the Squadron by then.

So it had to be in either '80 or '81........on that one l am sure, and from what was said, the record it hasn't been broken.

Yes l can also understand what you are saying about a team effort, but l was after what us planties did and who was there, just the names and equipment, as Mr Ward and l were having a few beers....... occasion14, and we got talking, and just wondered who was driving what on the night.

Yes the bunnies did do their bit, and their names would be greatly and hopefully mentioned, but the date's are def in that year, not when we came back from the Falklands, David.

Thanks' one and all, it has been nice reading this, brings it all back, great day's, great day's.

Thanks' again, any more is greatly accepted

Well said David

Us bunnies had the dangerous job of running around all you plant ops. Dont know who was towing the mat trailer but unstrapping it they almost got me under their wheels. Tony another one I owe you or ws it wardy.

Not to forget us lot on the Hilti's trying to get the mat bolted down. The record was won or lost by the speed of the "Hilti boys". Victory for the bunnies, never mind you pack lunch munching plant ops. Anyone can fill a hole with gravel and screed it.

Victory taken by the Bunnies Id say. Not possible with todays Health and Safety

remember the smell of the cutting edges on the concrete  and the sparks as I was wizzing around in the allis..............lovely!

great fun doing it, lovely place for a quiet drink (Laarbruch) the only thing which let it down was the company I kept..........very strange people some of them. they used to get drunk all the time and giggle like little girls, but always found things to complain about like old gits.

I just got on with it and did my job never mixed with them really, head down, mouth shut, you know the score............... unless I had to ofcourse............

Hi John,
Can't remember exactly what I was in on that night but most of my time was split between the Mitchy and the Atlas (as per the photo's in the gallery).
For some odd reason can remember bagging the bastards perfectly clearly ........  Weird !!!!!
So    Pete Allis (towed roller).
Tony Allis (skive on a pan somewhere)
Me Mitchy & Atlas ? ( seem to remember using both on most builds) ... Lack of Poms ?
       Wardy Mitchy ?
Porto grader ( also driver so could have been tipper)  ?
       Smudge Tipper ?
       Percy Tipper ?

Wasn't that night a full NBC ex so masks on not just carried?? i know we were in NBC suits anyway.
I'm prob way off but hay the memorys not what it used to be ................. I thought i was in the REME ??

The question is, .......what year did we win the ADR record for filling 2 bomb craters at RAF Laarbruch.

Also who drove what plant.....and what plant did we have on the night, l have been chatting about this and  we have discused about things like....

2 x Michy's 275
2 x Allis's
1 x Atlas
1 x Grader
1 x Bomag
4 x Tippers

Can anyone else answer who was there , and who drove what, apart from Danny Brady, on one hole , me on another, Nige Lee in charge listening to us .....
OK me shouting at Danny to "hurry up ya fat bast*rd with the roller"

We need help here all you ex people's that were on that night, as we are the "Champions" of this.......l think?

Can you help out with this please

Thank's

John
